Mason jars have become a household staple. Whether you're using them for storage, DIY projects, or simply enjoying a homemade treat, these versatile glass containers have so many uses. But here’s the thing: you can’t just throw any lid on a mason jar and expect it to work perfectly. That’s where the best mason jar lids come in. They need to seal properly, fit snugly, and match your needs for convenience and durability.
So, how did we go about finding the top mason jar lids? Well, it was a process, and we considered several important factors to make sure the lids we chose are the best. In this guide, we’ll walk you through why someone might need a mason jar lid, what factors we looked at during our review, and how we narrowed down our choices.
First things first—why would anyone need a dedicated mason jar lid? After all, you already have the jars themselves, right? Well, mason jar lids are essential for a few reasons:
Now that we know why mason jar lids are so important, let’s get into how we narrowed down the best ones. There are quite a few lids out there, and they vary in quality, design, and function. To help you make the best decision, we focused on the following factors:
One of the most important things to consider is how well the lid seals. If you’re using your mason jars for food storage, a tight seal is essential for keeping air, moisture, and contaminants out. Poor seals can lead to spoiled food or leaks when you’re transporting your jars. We checked lids for how easily they sealed and how well they stayed sealed. Some lids come with rubber gaskets that create a tight fit, while others are more specialized, like screw-on or twist-lock designs. We wanted lids that reliably create a secure, leak-proof seal.
The material of the lid plays a huge role in its durability. Most mason jar lids can be metal or plastic, but not all materials are equal. Metal lids are sturdier and more long-lasting, especially for repeated use. However, some plastic lids offer the same functionality with added convenience. We looked at the construction of each lid, considering factors like corrosion resistance (especially for metal lids) and BPA-free materials for food safety.
Some mason jar lids are simpler to use than others. For example, screw-on lids are very convenient for quick access to your jars, but other types, like flip-top or snap-on lids, may require a little more effort to secure properly. We wanted lids that are easy to use, whether you’re opening a jar frequently or securing it for long-term storage. Plus, a lid with a convenient pull tab or handle is ideal if you plan to be constantly opening and closing your jars.
Not all mason jar lids fit all mason jars, so we investigated lids for their compatibility with a variety of jar sizes. Some lids will fit only specific jars, while others are more universal, covering multiple jar shapes and sizes. We considered how well each lid fit different mason jar sizes, ensuring that it would create a snug seal without being too loose or too tight. A lid that fits well will prevent spills and offer better protection.
While function is the most important consideration, the design and aesthetic of the lid matter too. Some mason jar lids come in sleek, modern designs, while others have a more rustic, vintage look. Whether you’re using the jars for home decor, gifting, or personal use, the lid’s look can add to the overall vibe. We reviewed a variety of designs to see which lids not only work well but also enhance the jar’s aesthetic.
Some mason jar lids come with additional features that make them stand out, like pouring spouts, built-in straws, or even lids designed for specific uses like smoothies or brewing. We looked for lids that offered extra convenience or versatility, especially if you’re using mason jars for more than just storage.
The list of lids to choose from is long and contains many great products. After hours of research, a few stood out to use, which we will discuss further. As a teaser, have a look at our top pick:
In the end, finding the best mason jar lid comes down to what you need the lid to do. Whether you're looking for a lid that ensures your food stays fresh, one that’s durable enough for everyday use, or a stylish lid that fits your home decor, we considered all these factors during our review process.

Once a week I go jar to jar (all of my product is in glass mason jars from pint to one gallon and take a couple draws with the pump. Most do not need it. But it is good practice to ensure your vacuum and seal. One time the seal just wasn't working. I tool the lid off, cleaned the seals, reapplied the lid and it was fine. Bottom line is if it fails, it is likely a maintenance issue on you, not the product.
Read MoreTired of opening jars constantly to let you harvest breathe? I know it gets annoying to me! These definitely make the curing process go a lot smoother. Easy push of a button and then pump it up. I definitely wanna upgrade at some point to the automated style. I also have the brain and lid to be able to cure in a bucket. I can’t wait to see how that works as well! Great product, great customer service, totally recommend!

So i returned product, got a replacement and it worked perfectly for one week then did the same thing. I followed the instructions to a tee , and didn’t over pump either , yet pump still failed. Good concept but didn’t work. Burp inc you are welcome to contact me and make right .Updated: since I last submitted, spoke with burp lids. They made things right and sent me an updated pump, works great as it should. Five stars !!!
Read MoreI really like this product. It's a bit pricey but once I saw how well it worked and how easy it makes my lacto fermenting I'm a believer. I ordered 16 of them total for wide mouth mason jars to do my preserves for the winter from my garden. LOVE them!

Read MoreBurp Lids $19.99 (after a $10 off coupon): 4 lids and a hand pumpAIEVE Lids $14.99 : 6 lids(There is an AIEVE set of 6 lids plus a hand pump and a pounder for $21.99 but I didn’t want the hand pump or pounder.)So I wanted 12 fermentation lids.AIEVE was $29.98 for two packs of 6 lids (= 12 lids).Burp Lids was $59.97 (after $30 off in coupons) for three packs, each with 4 lids and 1 hand pump (= 12 lids and 3 hand pumps).I didn’t care about the hand pumps because I wanted to buy the Burp Lids Automatic Pump $24.99 (after a $5 off coupon). I read some reviews that mentioned the Automatic Pump worked with any brand of fermentation lids). The notches in both brands of lids helped me screw and unscrew the lids much better than regular smooth lids. Two packs of 6 lids from AIEVE and the Burp Lids Automatic Pump came in at $54.97!!! FIVE DOLLARS CHEAPER than three packs of Burp Lids (4 lids 1 hand pump per pack = 12 lids and 3 hand pumps). The packaging/branding of the Burp Lids is really nice. And the black and green colors make the lids look really sleek and shiny BUT apart from the colors, the lids were identical to the AIEVE lids.I took all the Burp Lids out of the packaging along with the pumps and examined them for imperfections since a lot of reviews mention receiving defective lids. All 12 lids were in perfect condition. I tested each one on a Ball brand jar, they all fit well. I also tested the hand pumps, they stink, they are very low quality pumps and not smooth to operate at all, all three pumps had the same problems. It takes at least 3 pulls to get all the air out of a jar. I can’t imagine fiddling with the hand pump through 12 lids. I also tested the Burp Lids Automatic Pump on each lid to make sure everything worked right, and I’m happy to report everything worked fine.Next I took all the AIEVE lids out of their packaging and examined them for imperfections and defects too. All 12 were in perfect working condition. I also tested each lid on a Ball brand jar, using the Burp Lids Automatic Pump with each one. They all worked perfectly.Regarding the Burp Lids Automatic Pump, you can just place it on the top of the jar, push the button, wait for it to turn green, turn it off and take it off of the lid and there is a satisfying pop sound when you take it off proving the seal. But I felt it worked better if I just held the Automatic Pump with a little bit of downward pressure against the lid, it made a better and stronger pop sound. Also you can feel it’s a stronger seal when you take the Pump off the lid.I tried to figure out which brand was better but they are exactly the same. The only difference I could find was the weight of the lids, Burp Lids lids came in at 39.2 grams and AIEVE lids came in at 41.1 grams, I don’t know that the weight difference makes any impact on the quality. If the Burp Lids were cheaper I’d be inclined to buy them, the bright green and shiny black, make them look very pretty and high end. But the price, even with the discount coupon, doesn’t make sense to me. The AIEVE lids aren’t quite as pretty or eye grabbing but they work just as well as the Burp Lids so I’m keeping the AIEVE lids and the Burp Lids Automatic Pump, they are a match made in heaven.I’m giving Burp Lids 4 stars due to the high price and sucky hand pump.I’m giving AIEVE lids 5 stars because they work great and are super affordable.I cannot emphasize enough that no matter which brand of fermentation lid you buy, you should buy the Burp Lids Automatic Pump, the hand pumps are completely worthless and a pain in the neck.See my Burp Lids Automatic Pump review for some videos and extra pics.
Read MoreEither won't seal or don't keep a seal, is what I've faced with these. These lids can be tricky to get on which can prevent a seal. The rubber burp which helps keep the vacuum tend to be too small or off centered. This allows for leakage. The others took a lot of tries and eventually sealed after some toggling and taking the lid on and off. Eventually all lids failed, but after several attempts I got a few to work properly. In the end, only 2 of mine never held a good sealUpdate: For best results with these lids.Make sure no debris are in the following places: rim of jar or outter sides of jar, lid's rim seal and lid's inner sides.Put the lid on top of your jar.Rotate counterclockwise until lid falls in place.Turn clockwise until tight and snugMake sure burp is centered and not cramp on any side. Do this before and after you use the pump to extract the air from within the jar.
Read MoreThe lids are great and the vacuum seals work as asvertised...but the pump does not. It stopped working after 2 days of use and does no longer suck the air out. No way to spot the error and repair as the pump can't be disassembled. A replacement pump (only the old version availabe) costs a whooping 22 Euros here in Germany... That's crazy for such a cheap piece of plastic. Already spent close to 100 Euros on the 12 lid set. In this price range one would expect quality on all parts... If I cant find a cheap replacement for the pump, I got to write the lids off as a failed investment as their main feature is useless without it...

Read MoreThese Burplids do not screw down parallel with the threads on the Mason Widemouth Jars, all of which I purchased together on Amazon. Thus, they never seal at all, and none of the 20 Burplids and 24 dark glass Mason Wide Mouth jars can close properly enough to form a vacuum seal. Not the hand vacuum pump that comes with the Burplids, nor the electric pump that I also purchased from Burplids can make a seal. Not even one of them can make a vacuum seal, not any at all. And believe me, I have tried everything possible to get them to work. The Burplids ad says, “Fits any Brand of Widemouth Mason Jar”. These are horrible at best, please do not purchase them: of false advertising and very poor Quality Control. I have never felt more disillusioned with a purchase on Amazon until now.
