I bought both the high-end Lignomat and the TopTes. I think for woodworkers moisture meters can become fetish items, so I was curious if I could get a useful tool for 25 bucks. For context, I’m a hobby worker in Asheville who generally buys raw lumber. If I was a home inspector, using it every day, I would buy a no touch, but this has great accuracy compared to super high-end meters. But when I tested this meter against another well regarded prong meter the readings as you can see in the photos were virtually identical.I’m sure the meters longevity might be different but for me and I think for a lot of non-pro woodworkers, this meter is a solid choice.Recently, we had a flood in our house from a broken icemaker line, And Service Master used a $1000 no touch meter ( looked up the model) to take moisture readings of our joists. I noted what readings he was getting, and once he was gone, use this meter at the exact same spots and it was always within range of his.It actually turned out to be incredibly helpful because I could identify places that still needed more drying even after they were ready to leave said remediation was “done”.For rough lumber and general household use this is a great meter.

I have been heating with wood for over 40 years. The TS-630 has made my choice of what wood to burn so much easier. I can now choose the best wood to start my fires and mix in some less seasoned wood. I also now burn types of wood that I wouldn’t previously because I thought the moisture content was too high regardless of how long it would be seasoned. Great tool to have regardless of what is used for the heat source and great value. I highly recommend this for anyone that uses wood for heating.

Finally I have a tool to tell me which ones are burnable & which need more air time. I've found it indispensable in the short time I've had it since this year I mixed cured wood with sections of a tree or 2 I cut earlier this year and were outside during a rainy summer here. Very frustrating trying to burn wet wood; this takes out the guessing. This seems durable, is easy to use, and now I keep it right next to my wood stove. Comes with an extra set of probes and a very thorough guide.

So I was a little disappointed with this unit for use in acclimating hardwood flooring. It works well for wetter wood, but I really had trouble getting a reading on the hardwoods, and when the installer showed up with his "professional" meter, he had no issues getting consistent and repeatable measurements from the same material. So, probably great for firewood, or mold remediation where wetter materials are involved, but not a great choice for hardwood flooring in my experience. It does seen well made, rugged, and is very easy to read.

Buying Guide

Ensure Precision in Woodworking with the Best Wood Moisture Meter

Wood moisture meters are invaluable tools for woodworking, allowing you to measure the moisture content of wood and ensure the quality and durability of your projects. With a variety of options available, selecting the right wood moisture meter requires careful consideration. Follow this guide to help you choose the best wood moisture meter for your woodworking needs.

Choose the Right Type of Moisture Meter

There are two main types of wood moisture meters: pin-type and pinless. Pin-type meters use metal probes to penetrate the wood, providing accurate moisture readings. Pinless meters use electromagnetic signals to measure moisture without damaging the wood surface. Consider your specific requirements and preferences when choosing between these types.

Check Moisture Measurement Range

Different wood moisture meters have varying measurement ranges. Ensure that the meter you choose covers the moisture levels relevant to your woodworking projects. A wider measurement range allows for versatility, accommodating different wood species and varying moisture conditions.

Look for Species Corrections

Wood species can impact the accuracy of moisture readings. Some wood moisture meters offer species corrections, allowing you to select the specific type of wood you are working with. This feature ensures more precise moisture measurements tailored to the characteristics of different wood species.

Consider Temperature Correction

Temperature can affect moisture readings. Look for a wood moisture meter with temperature correction capabilities. This feature adjusts moisture measurements based on the wood's temperature, providing more accurate results in different environmental conditions.

Check Moisture Meter Display and Readability

The display interface plays a crucial role in user experience. Opt for a wood moisture meter with a clear and easy-to-read display. Backlit displays are beneficial, especially in low-light conditions or when working in dimly lit spaces.

Evaluate Measurement Depth

Pin-type moisture meters come with different probe lengths, influencing the measurement depth. Choose a meter with probes that are suitable for the thickness of the wood you typically work with. Adjustable probe lengths offer flexibility for various project requirements.

Consider Built-in Calibration

Calibration ensures the accuracy of moisture measurements. Some wood moisture meters come with built-in calibration features, allowing you to recalibrate the meter as needed. This ensures that your meter remains accurate over time.

Check for Additional Features

Some wood moisture meters come with extra features, such as data logging, Bluetooth connectivity, or built-in ambient temperature and humidity sensors. Assess these additional features based on your specific needs and preferences.

With these tips, you will easily find the best wood moisture meter to enhance the precision and quality of your woodworking projects. Always prioritize your woodworking goals and select a meter that aligns with the demands of your craft.
